How to effectively remove manure on a poultry farm?

17/02/2026

Manure accumulation, poor hygiene, and increasing pressure on the workforce remain major challenges in poultry farming. To keep birds healthy and the farm running efficiently, you need poultry equipment that facilitates all processes. One of the most important elements is the manure removal belt (or droppings removal belt). It helps maintain cleanliness, reduces poultry diseases, and saves the farm owner time and money.

Why it is important to remove manure on a poultry farm

If manure is not removed regularly, it will quickly become a health problem for the birds and staff, as well as a problem for farm management. Improper manure management can lead to:

  • increased ammonia levels;
  • increased risk of disease from bacteria and viruses;
  • damage to flooring and equipment due to constant moisture;
  • farm workers spending more time cleaning.

Therefore, regular manure removal is critical if you want to have healthy birds and stable profits.

What is a manure removal belt and how does it work?

A manure removal belt is an automated “conveyor belt” inside a poultry house. Manure falls onto the belt, which transports it outside the premises, where it is collected in a special container or bunker.

Where it can be used:

The width and length of the belt are selected according to the size of the poultry house and the type of poultry. The belt must be made of durable materials that can withstand moisture and ammonia (polypropylene or rubber). Many modern conveyors use polypropylene manure removal belts or PVC belts, depending on the conditions. The manure removal belt can be integrated into the overall microclimate control system.

How automatic manure removal works on a poultry farm

The process of removing manure with a belt is very simple and requires almost no involvement on your part:

First, the manure is transferred to the belt using scrapers or a sloped floor. The belt then transports it smoothly and continuously to a container or bunker outside the poultry house.

The removed manure can be used as organic fertilizer for fields or gardens. If the manure needs to be disposed of, the container is easy to remove and clean. The entire manure removal process requires no additional effort, and the floor in the poultry house remains clean and dry, which has a positive effect on the health of the birds.

How to set up a manure removal system on a farm

In order for the manure removal belt to work effectively and not require constant intervention, it is important to set it up correctly. How you set it up determines the cleanliness of the poultry house, the health of the birds, and the profitability of the farm.

For effective operation, you should:

    1. Install the belt at the correct height and angle:

The height of the belt should be selected so that the manure falls freely onto the conveyor. The slope of the floor or scrapers directs the manure onto the belt, and the correct angle ensures smooth transportation without delays and reduces sticking.

    2. Adjust the conveyor speed according to the amount of manure:

The conveyor speed is selected according to the activity of the birds and the amount of manure. If the belt moves too fast, the manure can scatter and contaminate the floor. If the belt is slow, manure accumulates, the smell of ammonia increases, and the risk of bird disease increases.

    3. Integrate the belt with other automatic systems: ventilation, microclimate.

This means that all processes are controlled by a single microclimate controller or control program.

    4. Use sensors for livestock.

Modern belts can be equipped with sensors that start the manure removal conveyor when a lot of manure accumulates.

"The most common mistake is to install the belt ‘by eye’ or without taking into account the size of the poultry house and the type of poultry on the farm. We always recommend calculating the height, slope, and speed of the conveyor individually for each poultry house. For example, for cages with broilers, a conveyor width of 30–50 cm is sufficient, while for large aviaries, a width of 80–120 cm is required. The height of the belt should be 20–25 cm from the floor and the slope should be 1–2° so that the manure moves evenly," explains Alexander Zhilinsky, an engineer at VADA.

In modern poultry farming, the manure removal system is an operational factor, not a secondary issue. A well-designed manure removal system promotes cleanliness in the poultry house, which means fewer diseases, a better microclimate, and lower personnel costs.

When choosing manure removal belts and conveyors, it is important to choose a company that not only sells poultry equipment but also has experience in installing and integrating systems in poultry houses. For many years, VADA has been installing automated systems on farms of various sizes, taking into account the size of the poultry house and the type of poultry. As a result, your poultry house will have an optimal microclimate, increased productivity, and stable income.
